The First Normani: Not the Next Beyoncé
Okay, so I know the VMA’s were about Missy Elliot last night, but Normani’s performance was one for the books [below]. In her first ever solo performance at the award show, the singer / dancer performed ‘Motivation’, which featured a killer dance-break that was all over social media this morning.
When I saw Normani’s performance, the first thing I thought of was Beyoncé’s first solo performance at the 2003 BET Awards, where she performed ‘Crazy in Love’. I KNOW, I KNOW! I know we’re all sick of the Beyoncé comparisons, but hear me out…
There was something about the energy onstage, and the love she received from the audience. There is even more to be said about the seemingly flawless execution and delivery. Without knowing too much about her Fifth Harmony woes, I know it’s hard enough being a woman of color in the industry - meaning you have to work twice as hard to achieve the same recognition and notoriety as your peers. But after last night, if there were ever a question in your mind about Normani and her contribution to the culture - she set the record straight with a back-flip-split combo. She set the bar for the new girls - just like Queen Bey did back in the day (and is still doing today)!
We want powerhouse vocals! We want over-the-top dance routines in corny - but still cute costumes! We want Normani!
