Behind the Camera w/ Colby and John

The visuals that you all love so much from Issue III, would not have been possible without Colby Elliott and John Scott. The creative team, and couple helped us tie together the theme for this issue, and we don’t think anyone could have done it better.

Their chemistry is undeniable, both in their work and even off screen, so we had to know more about them:

Q&A

BTS Issue III cover shoot.

Q: How did your professional relationship blossom?

A: [Colby] Before we started dating, we worked together on a few projects. In the beginning it was more of team collaborations with other mutual friends, but as the years progressed we worked on projects that clients just brought us two on and it worked. We worked really well as a team.

Q: How do you maintain your personal and professional lives?

A: [Both] ANDRE! ANDRE! ANDRE Champagne. Always keep a bottle in the house because it can get real!

Q: Whats the hardest thing about working with your significant other?

A: [John] The hardest for me is if we are having hardships in our relationship - not letting it effect the business…Putting that pride aside for a moment and properly and professionally delivering the task we were given.

[Colby] The hardest part for me is the fact that since you work together, you now have a whole other list of reasons to argue. Which in my opinion can sometimes be harder to come back from because you are critiquing the other persons craft / passion.

Q: Whats the easiest thing about working with your s/o?

A: [John] We know each other on so many different levels so we can connect without even talking sometimes.

[Colby] We both truly enjoy what we do, so we are always ready and willing to just shoot whatever, whenever. I have always been a person to just literally think about ideas, shoots, outfits, etc., so it’s cool to be romantically involved with someone who shares the same interests as me.

Q: how would you describe your combined creative style?

A: [Colby] I don’t think we’ve tapped into our combined creative style yet. I think it’s because our styles are so opposite. I am more edgy, eclectic and colorful. Whereas John is more conservative and classic. I just think when we work together it just works! It also helps that John is super open to new ideas and trusts my vision.

Q: What advice do you have for couples who create / do business together, or are thinking about

A: [Both] Our advice to couples who create or work together is to compromise, but not too much. Stand true in your own individuality and find a way to combine the two. It won’t be easy, but it’s a beautiful feeling to see a vision that you and your s/o created come to life.
