10 of Our Favorite TV Moms

This past week I teamed up with a few contributors, and after a nostalgic - and quite hilarious sms thread, along with some additional help from our friends and family, we came up with a pretty solid list of the best TV moms ever. See our favorite 10 below.

Clair Huxtable - The Cosby Show

This list should begin and end with Mrs. Clair Huxtable. The name is almost synonymous with mom! For eight seasons she gave us firm, yet gentle love; sarcastic, yet charming humor; valuable lessons, and the most amazing smile.

Samantha Stephens - Bewitched

The fact that she was a witch living in 1960’s suburbia does it for me. But we all know and love Samantha for that famous nose-twitch, and her undying love for her husband, mother and daughter.

Rainbow Johnson - Blackish

She’s not only an overachieving mom, but she’s also a doctor, fashionista, and full of witty humor - a modern day Clair Huxtable if you will.

Ruby Johnson - Blackish

Of course we had to add Ms. Ruby Johnson - the mother-in-law of Rainbow Johnson. She has many strong opinions about Bow and they go at it all the time. But ultimately, she loves Bow for her son and grandchildren and serves as a necessary voice of reason for their entire family. Also, we love Jennifer Lewis as a mother on TV (and film) period.

Morticia Addams - The Addams Family

She may be stern and a bit aloof. But it is certain that Morticia Addams loves, and does not play about her family. She is also a witch. We love witches.

Julia Baker - Julia

For starters, Julia was a groundbreaking series because it was one of the first to depict a black woman in a “non-stereotypical” role. She was a widowed nurse with a young son, and a normal life, with normal friends, and normal love interests.

Tasha Mack -  The Game

Fast forward almost four decades later - to a more “stereotypical”, but necessary role for the times and culture - we’re introduced to Latash Mack. As a mother and manager of one of the most sought after football players in the league, Tasha Mack was single, successful, and funny. What more could you ask for?

June Cleaver - Leave it to Beaver

Hopefully she wasn’t racist, because June Cleaver is the blueprint for “Real Housewives”. Say what you want about a homemaker, but it takes extreme patience (and talent if you ask me) to be the perfect wife, mother, cook, maid, friend, host…and do it all in a pearl necklace, stylish frock, and a smile on your face.

Lisa Landry Sims - Sister, Sister

She most definitely had stylish frocks, but she was no homemaker. All the same, Lisa Landry Sims was nothing short of a mother to her adoptive daughter Tia. I mean, she moved in with her daughters twin sisters father after they fatefully ran into each other at the mall. Which luckily turned out to be the best thing that could have ever happened to their family.

Harriette Winslow - Family Matters

Fun fact: Harriette Winslow was first introduced on the sitcom Perfect Strangers, and we were introduced to her family in a spin off Family Matters. Harriette was stern and tough on the outside, but full of love and compassion on the inside.
